Intended primarily for use in writing and editing teaching materials, reference works, and nonfiction works in general, these guidelines have been compiled to alert authors and McGraw-Hill Book Company staff members both to the problems of sex discrimination and to various solutions. In addition, the guidelines reveal ways in which males and females have been stereotyped in publications, show the role that language has played in reinforcing inequality between the sexes, and indicate positive and practical approaches in providing fair, accurate, and balanced treatments of both sexes in the book company's publications.
